Herolds Farm History

In 1915 Charles and Elizabeth Hillman Herold bought land in the Southwestern corner of Glen Rock near where Prospect Street meets Saddle River Road. Most of the land was owned by Mabel and Harry Cobb but two adjoining acres containing a house and outbuildings were purchased from Christian and Adele Mueller. In the mid 1930's their eldest son Edward married and purchased the farm from the Herolds. Charles and Elizabeth moved down the road to a house at the southern end of the property just across the border in Fair Lawn. Edward and his wife Edna brought up their children, Edna and William, in the original home.

The farm was operated by Charles, Edward and another son until after World War II when Charles retired to California with Elizabeth. In 1955 Edna married Walter Amos, the son of James and Ruth Amos who owned a near by farm. Edna and Walter became the owners of Herold's Farm in 1965 when Edna's parents retired and moved to Oakland.

The 1930's store originally consisted of "two bushel baskets and a board" according to Edna. Many farm items were sold including corn, asparagus, tomatoes, strawberries and spinach. Soon the board gave way to a building. In 1955 the strip mall with an A&P where Bottle King is now located was built and in 1964 the Herolds sold 8 or 9 acres for a housing development behind Herolds Farm. A year later Edna and Walter bought the remaining property from her parents as a home to bring up their children, Scott, Robert and Margaret.

Over the years the business grew and in 1987 the old building was replaced with two red barn buildings connected by a greenhouse. One barn houses a garden center, the other a produce market. Today as the business continues to grow the values that made Herolds Farm successful have not been forgotten and every customer who comes to Herolds Farm can expect to be treated with care.
